I believe that these children, when combined, can turn your child into the most well rounded individual. If your worried about your child getting the wrong idea, then you need to ask yourself why. Then there is Sumo, who definitely lives in the poorest situation of them all, and is very adventurous, risky, but also realistic. Then there is Jeff who is a smart, cautious, and well organized individual who always follows the rules. Clarence is a funny, super happy, outgoing, and somewhat ignorant kid which is the reason he makes friends so easily. There are people out there who live in these kinds of lifestyles, and this show gives such a good positive vibe on their situations. Then there is Sumo who comes from a broken down family with many siblings and an irresponsible/furious father. Then there is Jeff who has lesbian parents (first time I have ever seen a gay couple in a show). Clarence himself lives with a single mother and her boyfriend Chad in a small home with not much luxury. Who are you to decide what is bad? These families in the show, which may not be idealistic to you, are still accurate and feasible representations of what a REAL families in this country are. Clarence is an amazing show, and I have read many reviews written by people claiming that it is an awful show with bad values and model families. Let me start by saying I am 18 years old, and even though I am 18, I still love cartoons for many reasons especially cartoon network. If you looked up the definition of lovely in the dictionary, you'd see a picture of Clarence. If you like that kind of thing, I definitely recommend you and your kid watch it together! It teaches good values without becoming overbearing. Or just one parent! Clarence himself lives with his mom and her boyfriend, Chad. Some have same sex parents, some have divorced parents. Clarence's friends come from many households. It's that diversity that I think is important to show to children. The cast is filled with characters who differ very much from each other. While it may seem goofy and air headed at times, most of the episodes teach an important message. The show is suitable for younger kids because it contains practical humor, so even if they're too young for one type of comedy, they can enjoy another!Ĭlarence is a layered show. I give this cartoon an A+ in connecting with its viewers but it might not be good for younger children to watch who are very impressionable. this show teaches children what is normal about the real world other cartoons don't teach kids (gay parents, children who act different, a not so perfect world that is still enjoyable if seen through positive eyes). Looking at it from the view of a psychologist I would say some characters could be meant to represent certain mental disabilities such as OCD, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, ADHD, etc. Many of the things the characters do in the show many kids did when I was growing up, the town they live in isn't clean and perfect like many cartoons have but there's litter and other realistic details, none of the characters are perfect and they have have obvious flaws (Clarence's is blissful ignorance which allows him to reach out and try to connect with even the most flawed of characters). It may not portray the best role models, but it portrays reality on a child's eyes.
